Successfully Navigating Leadership Challenges

As a leader, it is easy to feel like we are navigating turbulent waters. We want to be effective, fulfilled, and make an impact, but there are internal and external obstacles that can hinder our ability to thrive. Below are a few things that I have learned over the years that helped me break through growth barriers. I hope they can be of value to you as you navigate your own set of leadership challenges.

Be authentic. Over the years I have learned the value of being honest with myself. Let’s be real, honest self-evaluation is hard, but objectively identifying our strengths and weaknesses is a must. Be open to hearing feedback and gaining an outsider's perspective. Once we recognize our strengths and put the majority of our effort into maximizing them, we gain more traction. Identifying our weaknesses and gathering those around us to compensate for them achieves a more balanced approach.

Seek out mentors. Finding mentors who are willing to share their experiences and offer invaluable advice on how they overcame similar struggles is a game changer. I still reflect on advice my mentors have given me over the years. One of my favorite conversations was when one of my mentors said, “Guess what? It’s not all about you.” LOL. I still replay that sound bite in my head and it brings me great freedom.

Don’t isolate yourself. When we surround ourselves with friends and colleagues who are supportive rather than competitive, everyone wins. These supportive relationships help us get through the difficult seasons we all face. I would have given up a long time ago if not for my trusted inner circle of friends.

Lastly, be courageous. Don’t be afraid of moving out of denial and into reality. Most often, our greatest strengths are also our greatest weaknesses. When we stay humble, open hearted, listen to trusted counsel, apply good advice, and have healthy support systems in place, positive growth is inevitable.
