Organizational Drift

Drifting? It happens to the best of us. Sometimes it’s a nice drift, like into a taco stand, but when it happens to an organization it’s a detrimental drift.

So, what am I talking about? Organizational drift. It is an unintentional and gradual hands-off leadership approach that allows an organization to move in its own direction.

Why? For starters, we all know that we have seen some extreme cultural shifts over the last couple of years. Shifts no one could anticipate. Our methods and models have been forced to evolve but which ones work? Organizations have found themselves in uncharted waters navigating poor weather conditions. These conditions alone can create leadership fatigue or paralyzation - which is often at the root of organizational drift.

What are a few indicators? Drift typically moves an organization towards complexity. Have your systems and processes become complex? Are you meeting heavily to compensate? Has action been bottlenecked? Is there a breakdown in internal communication? Maybe you’ve heard a few comments that some staff are frustrated and don’t know exactly what the target is anymore. As the organizational leader, maybe you’ve found yourself in more of a management role than a visionary one. Maybe your organization has not experienced many wins lately. Any of these things could indicate your organization has drifted from its original mission.

If you’ve drifted, what do you do? Don’t beat yourself up. We have ALL been there. Leadership fatigue happens. We’ve all been paralyzed.
